    Tropical Weather Discussion for North America, Central America
    Gulf of America, Caribbean Sea, northern sections of South
    America, and Atlantic Ocean to the African coast from the
    Equator to 31N. The following information is based on satellite
    imagery, weather observations, radar and meteorological analysis.

    1005 UTC.

    ...SPECIAL FEATURES...

    Eastern Tropical Atlantic (Invest AL96): Satellite imagery
    indicate that showers and thunderstorms associated with an area
    of low pressure, located several hundred miles west-southwest of
    the Cabo Verde Islands, have become better organized tonight. If
    the current trends continue, advisories could be initiated on a
    short-lived tropical depression or storm later today. However,
    environmental conditions are expected to become hostile beginning
    on Friday, likely ending its chances for development. This system
    has a high chance of tropical cyclone formation through the next
    48 hours and 7 days.

    Caribbean Gale Warning: A tight pressure gradient between the
    subtropical ridge north of the area and the Colombian low will
    support fresh to strong easterly trade winds and rough to very
    rough seas through the forecast period. Winds will pulse to gale-force
    tonight off Colombia.

    ...TROPICAL WAVES...

    An eastern Caribbean Sea tropical wave is along 64W, south of
    21N, moving westward at 15-20 kt. No significant convection is
    observed with this wave.

    A central Caribbean Sea tropical wave is along 80W, south of 20N,
    moving westward at 15-20 kt. No significant deep convection is
    occurring with this wave.

    ...MONSOON TROUGH/ITCZ...

    The monsoon trough extends from the coast of Mauritania near
    19N16W to 11N38W. The ITCZ continues from 11N38W to 10N59W.
    Scattered moderate to isolated strong convection is occurring from
    04N to 15N and east of 23W.

    ...GULF OF AMERICA...

    A few showers and isolated thunderstorms are noted in the northern
    Gulf waters and off western Florida. A weak pressure gradient
    across the basin supports light to gentle winds and moderate
    seas.

    For the forecast, weak high pressure will persist across the Gulf
    waters through early next week, supporting moderate or weaker
    winds and slight seas. Winds will pulse to fresh to locally strong
    with moderate seas off western Yucatan during the evenings due to
    a diurnal surface trough moving west off the peninsula each
    night. A frontal boundary will meander near the northern Gulf
    waters during the next few days producing scattered showers and
    isolated thunderstorms. Mariners can expect gusty winds and higher
    seas associated with these storms.

    ...CARIBBEAN SEA...

    Gale Warning in effect for the waters off Colombia.

    A few showers and isolated thunderstorms are evident in the Gulf
    of Honduras, SE Caribbean and off Panama and Costa Rica. Drier
    conditions are noted elsewhere. Outside of the Gale Warning area,
    fresh to strong easterly trade winds and moderate seas are present
    in the north-central Caribbean. Moderate to locally fresh trades
    and moderate seas are occurring in the Windward Passage and the
    rest of the Caribbean south of 18N. North of 18N, light to gentle
    winds and slight seas are prevalent.

    For the forecast, a tight pressure gradient between the subtropical
    ridge north of the area and the Colombian low will support fresh
    to strong easterly trade winds and rough seas to locally very
    rough seas in the south-central Caribbean through the forecast
    period. Winds will pulse to gale-force tonight off Colombia.
    Winds will pulse to fresh to locally strong in the Windward
    Passage at night. An area of low pressure, Invest AL96, currently
    located in the eastern Atlantic has a high chance of tropical
    development over the next couples of days. The system will bring
    increasing winds and seas to portions of the Tropical N Atlantic
    this weekend.

    ...ATLANTIC OCEAN...

    an area of low pressure, Invest AL96, that has a high chance of
    tropical cyclone formation.

    A surface trough located SE of Bermuda is producing a few showers
    north of 26N and between 58W and 63W. Similar convection is found
    in the waters off NE Florida. The SW North Atlantic is dominated
    by a weak high pressure area that supports moderate or lighter
    winds and moderate seas, west of 60W.

    A cold front extends from Morocco to 26N22W to 28N34W, followed by
    a stationary front north of our area. Broad high pressure also
    prevails across the central and eastern tropical Atlantic,
    maintaining moderate to locally fresh easterly winds and moderate
    seas.

    For the forecast west of 55W, the subtropical ridge will dominate
    the SW N Atlantic waters over the next several days supporting
    mainly moderate or weaker winds and slight to moderate seas. Winds
    will pulse to fresh to locally strong off northern Hispaniola at
    night. An area of low pressure, Invest AL96, currently located in
    the eastern Atlantic has a high chance of tropical development
    over the next couple of days. The system will bring increasing
    winds and seas to portions of the southeast waters this weekend.

    Satellite images indicate that the area of low pressure (Invest
    AL96) has developed a well-defined center this morning along with
    organized deep convection.  There is a bit of northwesterly shear, 
    causing most of the thunderstorm activity to be located on the 
    southern side of the circulation largely away from the center. 
    Scatterometer data shows that the maximum winds are near 35 kt in
    the northeastern quadrant, along with a Dvorak T2.5/35 kt
    classification from TAFB, so advisories are initiated on Tropical
    Storm Dolly.  
     
    The initial motion estimate is 275/21 kt.  Dolly should continue
    moving quickly westward for the next couple of days under a strong
    ridge of high pressure over the central Atlantic.  Model guidance
    is tightly packed on a track towards the Leeward Islands, and 
    the NHC forecast is on the faster and southward side of the 
    guidance envelope.  This forecast is consistent with the NOAA HCCA 
    model and the well-known bias for models to be too slow and 
    poleward in the tropical Atlantic.
    
    The environment around Dolly should become unfavorable for 
    strengthening by tomorrow with increasing southwesterly shear due 
    to a central Atlantic upper-level trough, fast forward motion and 
    dry air aloft.  Until then, some slight intensification is 
    possible, consistent with the model consensus.  All of our guidance 
    is showing Dolly opening up into a strong tropical wave before it 
    reaches the Leeward Islands, which is our expectation as well, and 
    post-tropical positions are provided given the risk of gusty winds 
    and heavy rainfall.  
    
    The timing of the use of the name Dolly for this storm is purely 
    coincidental.  Tropical storm and hurricane names for the North 
    Atlantic Basin originate from six pre-determined rotating lists 
    established by the World Meteorological Organization Region IV 
    Hurricane Committee.  The name Dolly replaced Diana after the 
    1990 hurricane season and was first used in 1996.
    
    KEY MESSAGES:
    
    1. Although Dolly is forecast to no longer be a tropical cyclone 
    when it passes near the Leeward Islands, heavy rainfall could begin 
    to affect the Leeward Islands late Saturday into Sunday and the 
    Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Hispaniola Sunday and Monday.  This 
    heavy rain may produce flash flooding, especially in areas of 
    higher terrain.

    DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK
    ----------------------
    At 1100 AM AST (1500 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Dolly was
    located near latitude 13.6 North, longitude 38.7 West. Dolly is
    moving toward the west near 24 mph (39 km/h) and this motion is
    expected to continue for the next couple of days.  On the forecast 
    track, this system should be nearing the Leeward Islands this 
    weekend.
     
    Satellite wind data indicate that the maximum sustained winds are 
    near 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts.  Little change in strength 
    is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Dolly is forecast to 
    degenerate into a tropical wave before it reaches the Leeward 
    Islands.
     
    Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 km)
    from the center.
     
    The estimated minimum central pressure is 1007 mb (29.74 inches).

    and Tropical North Atlantic from 07N to 19N between 55W and 64W
    and the Southwest North Atlantic including the Bahamas

    ...GULF OF MEXICO...

    High pressure along the middle Atlantic coasts extending SW to
    the NE Gulf will remain generally stationary throughout the
    week. This will support moderate to fresh E to SE winds over the
    basin through Tue. Winds will increase to fresh to strong late
    Tue through Fri as low pressure deepens across the Southern
    Plains.

    ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN
    55W AND 64W...

    A ridge NE of the Caribbean Sea will shift eastward and weaken,
    diminishing winds and seas modestly through Wed. Trade winds
    will increase basin wide Wed night through Fri night as high
    pressure builds across the western Atlantic.

    ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS...

    A weakening frontal boundary from 25N65W to the central Bahamas
    will drift SE and dissipate through late Tue. Its remnants will
    drift N along 23N-24N. The pressure gradient between high
    pressure off of Hatteras and the frontal boundary will support
    an area of fresh to strong easterly winds N of 23N and W of 68W
    with seas to 11 ft E of the Bahamas late Tue through Fri.

The tropical cyclone statistics from the TWS will be found <br />on hurricanes.gov beginning with the 2025 hurricane season. This <br />change will allow for more frequent updates to the statistics and <br />the addition of graphics and links to supporting information that <br />this text only format cannot support.
